“เบ็ตตี้บาดเจ็บเพราะกินเบ็ดเข้าไป” นาวาโทขวัญเมือง คเรศตรี แห่งศูนย์อนุรักษ์พันธุ์เต่าทะเลสัตหีบ พูดถึงเต่าตัวโตที่อยู่ในความดูแล
มีเต่าจำนวนมากที่บาดเจ็บและตายจากการกินถุงพลาสติก เพราะคิดว่ามันคือแมงกะพรุนที่มีอยู่ทั่วไปในทะเล สัตว์โลกที่อายุยืนที่สุดนี้กำลังถูกทำร้ายโดนมนุษย์ผู้มาทีหลัง
ศูนย์อนุรักษ์พันธุ์เต่าทะเลสัตหีบ ซึ่งอยู่ในพื้นที่ทหารเรือสัตหีบ ปิดเกาะ 3 เกาะ คือ เกาะคราม เกาะจาน และเกาะอีร้า เพื่อเป็นพื้นที่ให้เต่าทะเลได้มาวางไข่ จากนั้นทหารเรือจะเก็บไข่เต่ามาเพื่ออนุบาลและปล่อยลงทะเล
ที่นี่มีโรงพยาบาลเต่าแห่งแรกของเอเชีย และเป็นแห่งที่สองของโลก สำหรับผ่าตัดเต่าที่บาดเจ็บจากการโดนอวนลากหรือกินเบ็ดของชาวประมง พอเต่าเริ่มฟื้นตัวก็จะพามาว่ายในสระทะเลเทียม เพื่อให้แน่ใจว่าแข็งแรงก่อนที่จะไปต่อสู้หากินต่อไป
ระหว่างที่รอให้เบ็ตตี้แข็งแรง เราพาเต่าทะเลตัวน้อยไปส่งที่ริมหาด เพื่อปล่อยให้มันแหวกว่ายออกสู่อ่าวไทยอันกว้างใหญ่
นอกจากกิจกรรมปล่อยเต่าแล้ว ยังสามารถชมธรรมชาติป่าชายเลน ซึ่งเป็นแหล่งกำเนิดอาหารและเกราะกำบังภัยธรรมชาติริมทะเล
มาเที่ยวครั้งนี้ สุขใจ ได้ความรู้จริงๆ
กองทัพเรือ เปิดให้เยี่ยมชมทุกวัน ระหว่างเวลา 08.30 – 17.00 น. โดยไม่เสียค่าใช้จ่าย โปรดแต่งกายสุภาพและงดการนำอาหาร เครื่องดื่ม เข้าไปรับประทานในจุดแสดงต่างๆ ไม่ส่งเสียงดังระหว่างการเยี่ยมชม

Releasing turtles into sea with sailors

“Betty was hurt because it swallowed a fishing hook,” Commander Kwanmuang Kharettree of the Sattahib Sea Turtle Conservation Center talked about a turtle under his care.
A lot of sea turtles were hurt or killed because they ate plastic bags, mistaking them as jellyfishes which are abundant in the sea. So, the longest-living creatures of the world are getting hurt because of human beings.
As a result, the sea turtle conservation center, which is located in the Sattahib Naval Base, has closed three islands and used them as areas for sea turtles to lay eggs. They are Koh Kram, Koh Jan and Koh Era. Sailors of the naval base then collect the eggs and hatch them and nurture the baby turtles before they will be released into the sea. The conservation center has a hospital for turtles. It is the first turtle hospital in Asia and the second one in the world. The hospital is specialized in performing surgery to cure turtles, which are injured by fishing nets or by fishing hooks. After the turtles have recovered from the surgery, officials will take them to swim in a sea water pool to make sure that they are strong enough for returning to the sea.
While we were waiting for Betty to become stronger, we helped the seamen of the naval base release baby sea turtles at the beach. We watched them swimming into the vast water of the Gulf of Thailand.
