คุณลุงสงวน แย้มไสย ชาวผู้ไทแห่งบ้านกุดหว้า อ.กุฉินารายณ์ จ.กาฬสินธุ์ เป็นหนึ่งในสมาชิกกลุ่มอนุรักษ์หัตถกรรมมาลัยไม้ไผ่ ซึ่งเทศบาลตำบลกุดหว้าตั้งขึ้น โดยรวมช่างไม้ผู้ชำนาญทั่วหมู่บ้านมาสืบทอดงานฝีมือบรรพบุรุษแล้วส่งต่อทักษะในงานศิลป์นี้ให้แก่ลูกหลานชาวผู้ไท
วิธีการทำ พวงมาลัยไม้ไผ่ เริ่มที่การเก็บไม้ไผ่ไร่ นำมาเหลาให้บาง แล้วดัดทรงให้เป็นดอกไม้ แจกจ่ายให้ลูกบ้านนำไปใช้แขวนปัจจัยต่างๆ ก่อนจะนำมารวมเป็นต้นกัลปพฤกษ์ถวายพระในช่วงเข้าพรรษา งานศิลปะพื้นบ้านชนิดนี้สะท้อนความเชื่อและศรัทธาในพุทธศาสนาของชาวผู้ไท
“เริ่มหัดทำเมื่อตอนเป็นหนุ่มน้อย สมัยนั้นช่างหนุ่มก็จะประดิดประดอยทำมาลัยส่งให้สาวที่หมายปองเพื่อร้อยปัจจัยไปวัด วันรุ่งขึ้นก็จะไปแอบดู ว่าหญิงสาวได้นำมาลัยไม้ไผ่นั้นไปวัดด้วยหรือเปล่า ถ้าไม่ได้เอามาลัยไปวัด ก็อาจร้อยไว้ตามหน้าต่างบ้าน เพื่อแสดงถึงความชื่นชม .. ปรากฏว่าป้าไม่ได้นำไปถวายพระเลย ที่หน้าต่างบ้านก็ไม่มี ตอนนั้นเสียใจมาก”
หากเป็นพระเอกในนิยาย ก็คงฟูมฟายหรือเชิดใส่ หมางเมินกันไป คุณลุงสงวนไม่ปล่อยให้ตัวเองอกหักง่ายดายแบบนั้น
“พอมีโอกาสได้คุยกับป้า ลุงเลยถามว่าไม่เห็นมาลัยที่วัดเลย ไม่ชอบเหรอ ..ป้าเขาตอบว่า จะให้เอาไปวัดได้อย่างไร ในเมื่อมาลัยที่ทำให้งามขนาดนั้น ก็เลยเก็บไว้ที่บ้าน ..พอได้ยินคำป้าเท่านั้น จากเสียใจกลับเป็นชื่นใจที่สุด”
นิยายรักของคุณลุงสงวนจึงแฮปปี้เอ็นดิ้งตั้งแต่นั้น วันนี้แม้มาลัยไม้ไผ่จะเก่าผุไปตามกาล แต่ความรักนั้นยังคงเป็นที่จดจำ
ทุกวันนี้ที่บ้านกุดหว้ามีการประกวดมาลัยไม้ไผ่เป็นประจำทุกปี ในงาน บุญพวงมาลัยไม้ไผ่ ช่วงเข้าพรรษาราวเดือนกันยายน ชาวบ้านจะนำมาลัยซึ่งร้อยปัจจัยต่าง ๆ มารวมเป็นต้นกัลปพฤกษ์เพื่อถวายพระ และจัดประกวดมาลัยไม้ไผ่ ร่วมด้วยการจัดกิจกรรมสมโภชต่าง ๆ เช่น การประกวดลำผู้ไท และร้องเพลงลูกทุ่ง ซึ่งนอกจากสร้างความรื่นเริงแล้วยังเป็นการอนุรักษ์วัฒนธรรมต้นฉบับของชาวผู้ไทไว้อย่างเหนียวแน่น
“มาลัยไม้ไผ่วิจิตรศิลป์” จึงเป็นที่รู้จักของนักท่องเที่ยว และกลายเป็นสินค้าขึ้นชื่อของชาวกุดหว้าโดยปริยาย ด้วยฝีมือช่างไม้แห่งแดนภูไทที่สืบทอดภูมิปัญญานี้ส่งต่อมายังลูกหลาน
“เราชวนช่างเก่ง ๆ มาเปิดสอนทำมาลัยไม้ไผ่ให้เด็ก ๆ ตามโรงเรียนในหมู่บ้าน เด็กสนใจ มานั่งดูนั่งถาม เราก็ค่อยบอก ค่อยสอนไป” คุณลุงสงวนเล่าพร้อมรอยยิ้ม พลางดัดไม้ไผ่อย่างชำนาญ เส้นสายลายริ้วแตกกร้านบนมือของคุณลุง บ่งบอกประสบการณ์ยาวนานบนเส้นทางศิลป์สายนี้
“แค่เขาทำได้ออกมาเป็นมาลัยหนึ่งดอก ลุงก็ภูมิใจแล้ว และมั่นใจว่างานศิลป์นี้จะไม่หายไปแน่นอน”

Bamboo mobile, love story and merit making
Sanguan Yaemsai, a Phuthai man from Kutwa Village, Kuchinarai District, Kalasin, is a member of the Bamboo Mobile Conservation Group established by the Kutwa Municipality. At this club, experienced carpenters in the village get together to teach new generation their mastery and art.
A bamboo mobile is not easy to make. The bamboo material has to be carefully selected, sheared until it is thin, then shaped into flowers. The flowers are distributed to everyone in the village. Money and monk necessities are then attached to the bamboo flowers. After that, these flowers are sent back and assembled into a tree or a mobile to be offered to the Buddhist monks at the beginning of Buddhist Lent. This local art clearly reflects the villagers’ strong belief in Buddhism.
“I first tried to make these flowers when I was a teenager. During my time, a young man would make a bamboo mobile for the girl that he likes. On the following day, he would check if the girl had attached some money to it and offered it to the monk. The girl may offer it to the monk or hang it somewhere in her house. I did one for my girl but she didn’t offer it to the monk nor did she hang it around the house. I was terribly sad.”
Sanguan did not simply give up.
“I tried to talk to the girl and asked her why she didn’t offer it to the monk. She said it was too beautiful to give away so she kept it in her room. Upon hearing her response, I felt elated.”
That’s his love story. Time has passed, and the bamboo mobile has long been gone, but not his love.
Every year, Kutwa Village hosts a bamboo mobile contest during their traditional Bamboo Mobile Festival. In September, at the start of the Buddhist Lent, villagers bring bamboo mobiles, each with money attached, to make a tree to be offered to the monks. In addition to the bamboo mobile contest, many activities are also held, such as the Phu Thai dancing and singing. It’s not only fun, but it’s also a valuable part of the Phu Thai culture.
“Bamboo mobiles” are now famous among travelers and have become a popular item that people buy from Kutwa Village. That’s how this art from has been passed on to the new generation.
“I asked some friends and those bamboo masters to teach children in schools. The kids were very interested. They watched us. They asked. We answered. We taught them.” Sanguan said with a big smile while his hands were busy shaping sheared bamboos. Lines and wrinkles on his hands reveal his years of experience in this craft.
“If the young ones could make only one bamboo flower, I am very happy and proud. I can be sure that this art will not die.”
