ชีวิตยามเช้า “บ้านสลักคอก” เงียบเชียบในช่วงเวลา “น้ำตาย” (ศัพท์ประมงพื้นบ้าน หมายถึงช่วงเวลาที่น้ำขึ้นน้อยและลงน้อย จนดูไม่ค่อยออกว่าเป็นเวลาน้ำขึ้นหรือเวลาน้ำลง ในหนึ่งเดือนจะมีช่วงเวลาน้ำตาย 2 ครั้ง )
เวลาเช่นนี้ชาวบ้านซึ่งส่วนใหญ่ซึ่งมีอาชีพทำประมงจะงดออกหาปลา แต่จะใช้เวลานี้ทำความสะอาด และซ่อมแซมเครื่องมือเครื่องใช้เพื่อรอเวลาออกทะเลครั้งต่อไป
ตกบ่ายเราก็มานั่งอยู่บนเรือ “กอนโดลา” ซึ่งความจริงคือเรือมาด หรือเรือขนาดเล็ก ที่ได้รับขนานนามจากนักท่องเที่ยวให้เป็น
กอนโดลาแห่งเกาะช้าง โดยมีชาวบ้านที่ว่างจากภารกิจประจำวันมาช่วยคัดท้ายให้
ลมเย็นหอมกลิ่นไอทะเลปะทะใบหน้า พาให้เคลิ้มเห็นภาพตัวเองนั่งจิบไวน์ขาวพร้อมอาหารทะเลปรุงสด
ดื่มด่ำจินตนาการไปกับความสมบูรณ์ของธรรมชาติป่าโกงกางสองฝากฝั่งที่เรือแล่นผ่าน มีภูเขารอบข้างตระหง่านครึ้มเขียวโอบกัน ภาพงามที่เป็นจริงยามทินกรจะลาลับฟ้า พาให้เคลิ้มไปถึงขั้นอยากจะมีสาวคนรักอยู่ตรงหน้า
หากไม่ชอบความโรแมนติก ที่นี่ก็มีเรือคายัคไว้คอยให้บริการสำหรับผู้ชื่นชอบการผจญภัยออกกำลังกาย
ลงจากเรือมาดเหมือนหลุดจากภวังค์ เราเห็นกั้งสด ปูเป็น ถูกนำขึ้นจากเรือสู่ตาชั่ง ซื้อขายกันแบบตลาดสดริมน้ำย่อยๆ มันเป็นวิถีที่นักท่องเที่ยวน้อยคนนักจะได้พบ
คุณเอ ราชันย์ ภู่ทนิน ผจก.กลุ่มอนุรักษ์ และชมรมนำเที่ยวพื้นบ้านสลักคอกบอกเราว่า ชาวบ้านที่นี่ทำประมงพื้นบ้านเป็นอาชีพหลัก รายได้ส่วนหนึ่งของชาวบ้านได้จากเงินปันผลหุ้นของกลุ่มอนุรักษ์ และจากการรับจ้างแจวเรือมาดให้นักท่องเที่ยวซึ่งเป็นอาชีพรอง
นอกจากจะมีธรรมชาติที่สวยงามแล้ว บ้านสลักคอกยังเป็นหมู่บ้านที่ผู้คนมีความคิดสร้างสรรค์ และช่วยกันวางรากฐานการพัฒนาไว้บนความเป็นสีเขียวแบบยั่งยืน เราสังเกตว่าที่นี่แทบไม่มีขยะให้เห็นแม้ชิ้นเดียวทั้งบนบก และในลำคลอง
ไม่ไกลจากบ้านสลักคอกคือ หมู่บ้านสลักเพชร เรากราบนมัสการหลวงพ่อเพชร ณ วัดสลักเพชร ก่อนเที่ยวชมประภาคารท่าเทียบเรือของหมู่บ้านที่นักท่องเที่ยวต้องมาขึ้นเรือเพื่อไปดำน้ำดูปะการัง ตกหมึก ตกปลา หมู่บ้านชาวประมงปลูกอยู่เหนือผิวน้ำ บ้านแต่ละหลังปักเสาลงในทะเล มีสะพานเชื่อมต่อถึงกัน
ชาวบ้านสลักเพชรดำรงชีวิตด้วยการทำประมง และทำโฮมสเตย์ที่มีให้เห็นอยู่มากมาย
หนึ่งวันบนเกาะช้างในมุมมองที่แตกต่าง เราเชื่อว่าหากคุณได้มาสัมผัสมนต์เสน่ห์ของหมู่บ้านชาวประมงแห่งนี้ จะประทับใจในประสบการณ์ที่ต้องจดจำและย้อนกลับมาเยือนอีกครั้งเป็นแน่

Simply romantic on Koh Chang
Breathing in deeply, we could feel the fresh air and the humidity from the tall mountains surrounding this small village set in a tiny bay on Koh Chang.
In this trip, we bring you to enjoy the simply romantic stay at Ban Salak Kok, a small fishing village on Koh Chang, Trat, on the very easternmost point of Thailand.
Everything seemed to stop early morning today in neap tide (when the tide’s range is at its minimum, which occurs twice a month). Most of the villagers, who are fishermen, usually do not go to the sea but spend time mending their fishing tools for their next fishing trip.
In the afternoon, we went on the “gondola”, in fact a local wooden boat but is called Koh Chang gondola by tourists. While floating slowly through the rich mangrove forest with cool sea breeze on the face, we imagined ourselves sitting in a real gondola sipping wine and seafood. Wake up! We told ourselves and again appreciated the green trees around and the tall mountains far away. The last light of the day painted the sky orange. How nice would it be if your loved one is here with you, only two of you on the boat…
If you are not keen for such a romantic experience, try kayak. It’s quite a good exercise though.
Disembarking the boat, the romantic experience ended. A new experience then waited in front of us. Fresh prawns and crabs were unloaded from the boat and brought directly on scale as they are sold quickly, a rare scene in our lives but a routine for the locals.
Khun A Rachan Phutanin, the head of Ban Salak Kok Conservation and Tourism Club, told us that most of the villagers are fishermen. Parts of their income are from dividend paid by the Club and boat service provided to visitors.
In addition to the nice natural setting, Ban Salak Kok is unique with the creativity of the villagers. With their long vision, the villagers drew their own village development plan with an aim to maintain the environment as green as possible. One thing that we noticed is that we hardly see a piece of garbage on ground and in the water.
Not far from Ban Salak Kok is Ban Salak Petch. We went there to pay homage to the secret Buddha image at Salak Petch Temple and then to visit the lighthouse at the pier where visitors wait for boat trip to catch squids or snorkel. A fishing village was built in the sea with pillars underwater. Each house is linked with a bridge. People here at Ban Salak Petch earn their living of fishing and operating homestay business.
One day on Koh Chang went so quickly. But in that very short period, we have had a different view of life, a very charming way of life. Come and visit this small fishing village and you will find it hard not to come back again.
Ban Salak Kok, Koh Chang Tai Sub-district, Koh Chang District, Trat, is a small fishing village that now becomes well-known worldwide as an eco-tourism destination. The village was awarded the Green Globe Award 2007, an award that guarantees its uniqueness. The award is credited to the hard work and clear vision of the Ban Salak Kok Conservation and Tourism Club.
