ยอมรับกันซื่อๆว่า ที่มานครศรีฯครั้งนี้ ก็เพราะอยากมาดูโลมาสีชมพู ดังนั้น หลังจากไหว้พระธาตุนครศรีธรรมราชเป็นศิริมงคลชีวิตแล้ว เราก็มุ่งสู่อำเภอขนอม หาที่พักริมทะเล นอนรอรุ่งเช้าด้วยความตื่นเต้น
เจ้าบ้านบอกว่าถ้าอยากเจอโลมา ก็ต้องตื่นแต่เช้าสักหน่อย เพราะถ้าสายๆ อากาศร้อน โลมาอาจจะไม่ขึ้นมาให้เห็น
เรือประมงลำน้อย ลอยลำออกจากท่าเรือแหลมประทับ พาเราเดินทางไปในทะเลกว้าง เสียงคลื่นซัดชายฝั่งค่อยๆ เบาลง เบื้องหน้าคือผืนน้ำสีมรกต มองไปโล่งตาถึงสุดเส้นขอบฟ้า กลิ่นทะเลอาบอวลอยู่ในบรรยากาศทำให้เราตื่นเต้น เพราะคาดได้ว่า กำลังอยู่ใกล้โลมาเข้าไปทุกที ทุกที
แต่เมื่อเรือแล่นไปได้สักพัก ก็เลี้ยวเลาะขนานไปตามชายฝั่ง ผ่านหมู่เกาะน้อยใหญ่นับสิบเกาะ จนถึงเขาพับผ้า หรือที่ชาวต่างชาติเรียกว่า Pancake Rock หนึ่งในความมหัศจรรย์ทางธรรมชาติในประเทศไทย
รูปลักษณ์ประหลาดที่มองเห็นเป็นหินซ้อนพับกันหลายชั้น ราวกับหน้าผานั้นคือผืนผ้าแผ่นยักษ์ ที่พับจนเรียบร้อยซ้อนทับกันเป็นตั้งสูง
เวลาผ่านไปเกือบชั่วโมง ก็ยังไม่มีวี่แววของเจ้าโลมาสักตัว จากที่ตื่นเต้นก็เริ่มหวั่นใจเล็กๆ จนต้องถามคุณลุงนายท้ายเรือว่า เคยมีไหมที่นักท่องเที่ยวออกเรือมาแล้วจะไม่เจอโลมา คุณลุงก็บอกว่า 98 เปอร์เซ็นต์จะเจอ เพราะเวลาคุณลุงออกเรือไปหาปลา ก็เจอทุกวัน บางครั้งนั่งเล่นอยู่ชายฝั่งยังเจอเลย
สอดส่ายตาไปเรื่อยๆ มองหาเจ้าโลมา ภาวนาสาธุขอให้เจอ มองซ้าย มองขวา ก็เจอแต่เรือลำเล็กที่มาทอดแหหาปลา ไม่มีวี่แววว่าจะเจอโลมาสักตัว สายตาเริ่มจ้องเขม็ง แต่ยังไม่หมดหวัง แล้วก็พลันเห็นโลมากระโดดขึ้นมาเหนือน้ำ พวกเราถึงกับเฮลั่นกันทั้งเรือ ทำเอาเรือโคลงเคลงไปเล็กน้อย เท่านี้ก็ดีใจนักละ แล้วก็ต้องตกใจอีก เมื่อเจ้าโลมาสีชมพูตัวใหญ่ โผล่มาจ๊ะเอ๋สบตาข้างๆลำเรือ ..ตรึงให้เราตะลึงมอง ช่างน่ารักเสียจริง
คุณลุงนายท้ายบอกว่า โลมาเหล่านี้มักพบในบริเวณที่มีเรือประมงเล็ก เพราะเขาจะมากินปลาตัวเล็กๆ ตามธรรมชาติของระบบนิเวศในทะเล
โลมาที่เห็นนั้น เป็นโลมาหลังโหนก โดยทั่วไปจะมีสีเทาขาว แต่พออายุมาก สีก็จะสว่างขึ้นจนเป็นสีชมพูหวาน
วิถีของโลมานั้นมักจะว่ายอยู่รวมกันเป็นกลุ่ม 2 ตัวบ้าง 4-5 ตัวบ้าง โลมาสีชมพูที่พบย่านนี้มีอยู่ด้วยกันราว ๆ 10 ตัว แต่โลมาสีเทาทั่วไป มีอยู่มากถึง 40-50 ตัว ซึ่งเป็นจำนวนที่ลดน้อยลงกว่าแต่ก่อนมาก
หากวันไหนสภาพฟ้าฝน ไม่เอื้ออำนวย หรือมีเรืออวนรุนเข้ามาชายฝั่ง ก็อาจจะต้องทำใจเล็กน้อยที่จะไม่ได้เจอโลมา
นั่งดูโลมาแหวกว่ายเพลินๆ ก็สงสัยเหมือนกันว่าทำไมพวกเขาจึงมาอยู่ที่ทะเลขนอมกัน คุณลุงช่วยตอบข้อสงสัยนี้ให้ว่า ที่ทะเลขนอมเป็นแหล่งหญ้าทะเลที่อุดมสมบูรณ์ขนาดใหญ่ โลมาจึงมาอาศัยอยู่ที่นี่เยอะ ยิ่งโลมาสีชมพูที่เริ่มอายุมาก ก็จะไม่ค่อยออกไปไกลฝั่งนัก หากแต่จะแหวกว่ายอยู่ในแหล่งหญ้าทะเลที่อุดมสมบูรณ์แถบนี้ เหมือนมนุษย์สูงวัยที่อยากจะใช้ชีวิตอยู่นิ่ง ไม่ออกจากบ้านไปโลดโผน
ได้ดูโลมาแหวกว่ายเล่นชัดๆในทะเลกว้าง ช่างให้ความรู้สึกแตกต่างจากการไปดูโลมาโชว์ตามสวนน้ำ เพราะโลมาที่นี่เป็นโลมาอิสระ ไม่อาจบังคับหรือล่อด้วยอามิสใด ๆ ให้เขาเข้ามาหาได้
อยากมาเขาก็มา..เหมือนที่เราอยากดูเขา .. เราก็มานี่ไง..
น่ารักจริงๆ เลย.
Pancake and Pink Dolphins
Frankly speaking, it’s the pink dolphins that brought us here to Nakhon Si Thammarat. Right after paying homage to Phra That Nakhon Si Thammarat, we headed to Kahom District, searched for a place to stay and spent the night waiting for tomorrow.
People said if we wanted to see dolphins, we had to wake up early. If we were late, it would be too hot and dolphins will not show up.
A small fishing boat slowly left Laem Pratap Pier to take us to the wide sea. The pleasant noise of waves rushing to the shore soon faded. In front of us was the turquoise sea and we could see nothing but the skyline. The strong smell of the sea built our excitement as we knew we were getting near the home of these lovely creatures.
For a short while, the boat moved straight ahead before it turned and cut through various islands to Khao Pab Pha or Pancake Rock. This is one of the most amazing natural wonders in Thailand. Layers of limestone formations cut an amazing shape that looks like pancakes stacked in the middle of the sea.
For almost an hour, we traveled the sea without any pink dolphins in sight. Finally, we grew impatient and asked the boat driver about our chances of seeing a dolphin. He said 98 per cent of visitors were lucky. He himself would see them every day while going out to catch fish. Sometimes, he would be sitting and relaxing on the beach and even saw them.
Please, please, please, dolphins. Come and let us see you! We looked on the left, right, straight, back. But what we saw were only small fishing boats. Our hopes faded. Suddenly one jumped out of the water and we all screamed in delight. Well, one was good enough. Wait! What’s that next to our boat? A pink dolphin was swimming along with the boat. Our eyes met. How lovely it was!
The boat driver said we can usually find the dolphins in an area where small fishing boats go. These animals usually come to catch small fishes, which is a natural eco-system.
The pink dolphins are actually called Indo-Pacific hump-backed dolphins. They are generally grey in color but when they grow older their color becomes lighter until it turns pink. They usually stay in groups of two to five. In this area, there are around 10 pink dolphins and 40-50 grey dolphins. Their number used to be higher in the past.
On a rainy day or when a bigger fishing boat comes into this area, the dolphins would hide.
While watching pink dolphins swimming around, we wondered why they were here in Kanom. The boat driver said Kanom was rich in sea grasses. Older pink dolphins are tired of going far out in the sea and prefer to stay home where they can find an abundance of sea grasses. Well, this is similar to human beings who generally stay home and lose their interest in going out for adventure.
It was amazingly impressive to see the dolphins in the sea. It was a real experience and very much different from seeing them inside an aquarium. They are free to go anywhere and cannot be controlled or lured.
They come when they want to. Like us, when we want to see them, we come here.
